Turkey in a Bread Basket
Creamy turkey and broccoli in a savory milk sauce with bacon, served in a golden garlic-buttered bread bowl.

- 8 oz fresh broccoli
- 1 whole medium onion, sliced thin
- 4 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter or margarine
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 0.5 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp pepper
- 1/8 tsp ground sage
- 1 cup milk
- 2 0.5 cup cooked turkey, cut up
- 4 slice bacon, crisply fried and crumbled
- 1 loaf (1.5 lbs) unsliced sandwich bread
- 0.5 cup butter or margarine, melted
- 1 clove garlic, crushed

Make bread basket: Remove crust and cut inside from bread, leaving a ½-inch base and walls. Mix melted butter and garlic; brush all over bread. Bake on a rack at 325°F for 25 to 30 minutes until golden and crisp.

Steam broccoli stalks 5 minutes, then add florets and steam another 5 minutes until crisp-tender.

Cook onion and mushrooms in margarine until tender, about 5 minutes. Blend in flour, salt, pepper, and sage. Cook until bubbly; add milk and stir until boiling and thickened.

Stir in turkey, broccoli, and bacon. Heat 5 minutes.

Spoon turkey mixture into the bread basket and serve immediately.
