Nutmeg is a seed from the nutmeg tree. Whole nutmeg can be grated or you can buy ground nutmeg. The nutmeg seed also gives us a second spice called mace. The mace comes from a lacy membrane surrounding the seed. Mace is more pungent tasting than nutmeg but can be used interchangeably.
