  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 1 cup lard (lard is in original recipe but you can use other shortening--Harriet)
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 heaping teaspoon soda dissolved in a little hot water
  • ½ cup nuts (or more), if desired

Instructions

    Boil sugars, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, salt, raisins, water, and lard for 6 minutes; let cool.

    Add flour, soda, and nuts.

    Pour into 9 x 13 pan.

    Bake 1 hour at 350º.
