Ingredients

Servings
4
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Food colors, if desired

Instructions

  1. 1

    Preheat oven to 375ºF.

  2. 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.

  3. 3

In a large mixing bowl, beat butter until creamy. Add sugars and beat until well combined.

  4. 4

Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.

  5. 5

Gradually add dry ingredients to butter mixture, mixing just until combined.

  6. 6

Divide dough into 3 equal parts; tint each part with desired food colors.

  7. 7

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one-third of the dough at a time to 1/16-inch thickness.

  8. 8

Cut into 6- to 8-inch stockings and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Cut accent dough (toes, heels, cuffs) to place on stockings if desired.

Bake about 9 minutes or until light brown. Cool 1 to 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.

  10. 10

    Cool completely before glazing.
