mary's sugar cookies -- (see recipe)
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Food colors, if desired

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, beat butter until creamy. Add sugars and beat until well combined.

Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.

Gradually add dry ingredients to butter mixture, mixing just until combined.

Divide dough into 3 equal parts; tint each part with desired food colors.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one-third of the dough at a time to 1/16-inch thickness.

Cut into 6- to 8-inch stockings and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Cut accent dough (toes, heels, cuffs) to place on stockings if desired.

Bake about 9 minutes or until light brown. Cool 1 to 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.

Cool completely before glazing.
