King Cake
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk (110 degrees F)
- 2 pkgs dry active yeast
- 0.5 cup sugar
- 8 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 5 egg yolks
- 4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp grated lemon zest
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 2 0.5 cup powdered sugar
- 1 lemon, juiced
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 package purple, green, and gold sugar sprinkles
Instructions
- 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine the yeast, sugar, and butter in a mixer bowl with a dough hook. Add warm milk and beat on low for 4 minutes.
- 2
In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, nutmeg, and lemon zest. Add to yeast mixture. Mix on low until combined, then increase speed to medium until dough pulls away from the bowl sides.
- 3
Coat dough with 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, return to bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 2 hours.
- 4
Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine cream cheese and 1/2 cup powdered sugar. Mix well.
- 5
Roll out the dough into a long rectangle. Spread the cream cheese filling down the center. Fold and shape into a ring, pressing to seal. Place on a greased baking sheet.
- 6
Cover and let rise again until doubled, about 45 minutes.
- 7
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden. Cool completely.
- 8
In a bowl, combine remaining powdered sugar, lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons milk to make icing. Drizzle over the cooled cake.
- 9
Immediately sprinkle alternating sections of purple, green, and gold colored sugars over the icing.
