  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tbsp cracked black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable shortening
  • 0.3 cup buttermilk, plus 1 tsp

    Preheat oven to 375°F.

    In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cracked black pepper. Blend thoroughly.

    Cream in the shortening with your fingers or a fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

    Add the buttermilk a little at a time, working it in just until incorporated into a smooth ball of dough. Do not overwork.
