Ingredients

Servings
4
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 12 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 9 slices white sandwich bread, crusts trimmed
  • 5 oz cooked ham, cut into ½-inch pieces
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 0.5 cup grated Gruyère cheese, divided
  • 1 0.8 cup whole milk
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 3/8 tsp salt
  • 0.3 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1

Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté mushrooms until golden, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

  2. 2

Butter a 9×13-inch glass baking dish. Line bottom with half the bread slices.

  3. 3

Top bread with ham, then 1 cup Gruyère, then mushrooms. Add remaining bread in a single layer.

  4. 4

Whisk together eggs, milk, half the thyme, dry mustard, salt, and pepper. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

  5. 5

Remove from refrigerator; let stand 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  6. 6

Bake uncovered about 1 hour until puffed and golden.

  7. 7

Mix remaining ½ cup Gruyère with remaining thyme; sprinkle over strata. Bake 3 minutes until cheese melts.

  8. 8

Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
