Ham and Mushroom Strata

- 2 tbsp butter
- 12 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 9 slices white sandwich bread, crusts trimmed
- 5 oz cooked ham, cut into ½-inch pieces
- 5 large eggs
- 1 0.5 cup grated Gruyère cheese, divided
- 1 0.8 cup whole milk
- 1 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
- 1 tsp dry mustard
- 3/8 tsp salt
- 0.3 tsp black pepper

Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté mushrooms until golden, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Butter a 9×13-inch glass baking dish. Line bottom with half the bread slices.

Top bread with ham, then 1 cup Gruyère, then mushrooms. Add remaining bread in a single layer.

Whisk together eggs, milk, half the thyme, dry mustard, salt, and pepper. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Remove from refrigerator; let stand 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake uncovered about 1 hour until puffed and golden.

Mix remaining ½ cup Gruyère with remaining thyme; sprinkle over strata. Bake 3 minutes until cheese melts.

Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
