Authentic Mexican Tortillas
Homemade flour tortillas from scratch, soft and pliable — essential for tacos, burritos, and wraps.
Ingredients
- 3 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 2 tsp salt
- 0.8 cup shortening
- 0.8 cup hot water
Instructions
- 1
Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the shortening until the mixture is crumbly.
- 2
Add about 3/4 cup hot water, or just enough to make the ingredients look moist. Knead until a soft round shape forms, rubbing against the sides of the bowl to gather dough.
- 3
Cover with a dish towel and let rest for about 1 hour.
- 4
Pull dough apart into 10 to 12 balls. Lightly flour a surface and roll each ball to about 1/8 inch thickness.
- 5
Cook each tortilla on a medium-hot cast iron skillet for 1 to 2 minutes per side.
