Mix the salt and flour together and cut in the shortening. Add the water a tablespoon at a time. Form the dough into a ball and roll out on floured surface. This dough will dry out quickly, so use immediately. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Bring the apples and 1/3 cup of water to a boil in a saucepan, lower the heat and simmer for about five minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients, except the butter, and bring to a boil once more. Boil for about a minute, then add the butter. Cut you’re the dough into circles or squares and fill with the apples. Bake on a greased cookie sheet at 425 degrees for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Drizzle a con- fectioner’s sugar and water glaze over the turnovers when cool. ____________________ Did You Know? Apples absorb odors. They emit ethylene gas, which when placed with other unripe fruits will cause them to ripen quicker.
