Ingredients

Servings
4
  • 1 lemon halved
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples
  • 1 sheet ready-to-use puff pastry (8-10 oz)
  • 2 tbsp superfine sugar
  • 1 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat oven to 425°F. Squeeze the lemon into a wide, shallow dish, and top with cold water.

  2. 2

Peel and core apples, then cut in half. Immerse apples in lemon water.

  3. 3

Place puff pastry on a large baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to lightly score a half-inch border; do not cut all the way through.

  4. 4

    Refrigerate pastry until needed.

  5. 5

Pat apples dry, and cut each half into quarters. Slice each quarter thinly.

  6. 6

Remove pastry from refrigerator, and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar. Working inside scored lines, place neat rows of closely overlapping apples until pastry is covered.

  7. 7

Brush apples with melted butter, and sprinkle with remaining sugar.

  8. 8

Bake until pastry puffs around apples and fruit is soft and lightly colored, 20 to 25 minutes. Serve warm.
