Ingredients

Servings
4
  • 1 lb ground chuck
  • 6 oz canned tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp prepared yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp dried minced onion
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp celery seed
  • 0.5 tsp ground cumin
  • 0.3 tsp ground black pepper
  • 4 count beef frankfurters (7½-inch, about 2 oz each)
  • 4 count hot dog buns
  • 4 tbsp chopped white onion
  • 2 tbsp shredded mild cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

In a 2-qt. saucepan, brown the ground chuck over medium heat, breaking into very small pieces. Salt and pepper lightly while cooking. Do not drain the fat.

  2. 2

Add tomato paste, water, sugar, mustard, dried minced onion, chili powder, Worcestershire, salt, celery seed, cumin, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

  3. 3

Simmer uncovered 30–45 minutes until the sauce thickens, stirring occasionally. Allow to cool, cover, and refrigerate until needed.

  4. 4

To cook franks: bring a 2-qt. saucepan of water to a rolling boil. Remove from heat, add frankfurters, cover, and let sit 10 minutes.

  5. 5

Microwave the chili dog sauce until steaming. Microwave each hot dog roll for 10 seconds to warm.

  6. 6

Remove cooked franks with tongs and place on rolls. Top each with about 3 tablespoons chili sauce, chopped onion, and optional shredded cheese.
